Total, Direct, and Indirect Effects in Structural Equation Models

چکیده
Decomposing the total effects of one variable on another into direct and indirect effects has long been of interest to researchers who use path analysis. In this paper, I review the decomposition of effects in general structural equation models with latent and observed variables. I present the two approaches to defining total effects. One is based on sums of powers of coefficient matrices. The other defines total effects as reducedform coefficients. I show the conditions under which these two definitions are equivalent. I also compare the different types of specific indirect effects. These are the influences that are transmitted through particular

Introduction: Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is a very general statistical modeling technique, which is widely used in the behavioral sciences. It can be viewed as a combination of path analysis, regression and factor analysis. One of the prominent features of this method is the ability to compute direct, indirect and total effects, as well as latent variable modeling. Methods: This sy...

Abstract Several studies show that attachment styles can have a significant impact on the couple’s marital quality. This impact can be direct or indirect and can be in interaction with other significant psychological variables such as relationship attributions and conflict resolution strategies. This study aimed to investigate direct ...
متن کاملSimultaneous Estimation of Indirect and Interaction Effects using Structural Equation Models
Interaction effects are usually modeled by means of moderated regression analysis. Structural equation models with non-linear constraints make it possible to estimate interaction effects while correcting for measurement error. From the various specifications, Jöreskog and Yang's (1996, 1998), likely the most parsimonious, has been chosen and further simplified. Up to now, only direct effects ha...
متن کاملExploring the Role of Strategic Knowledge and Strategic Regulation in Iranian EFL Learners' Listening Performance: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach
Drawing on the insight from metacognition theory, second language researchers conceptualize strategic knowledge and strategic regulation as the two dimensions of strategic competence in language performance. In this regard, the present study aimed at determining whether strategic knowledge and strategic regulation are related to listening performance. The study also attempted to specify how str...
متن کاملStructural Equation Modeling in the Communication Sciences , 1995 – 2000
Structural equation modeling (SEM) is a viable multivariate tool used by communication researchers for the past quarter century. Building off Cappella (1975) as well as McPhee and Babrow (1987), this study summarizes the use of this technique from 1995–2000 in 37 communication-based academic journals. We identify and critically assess 3 unique methods for testing structural relationships via SE...
